Several emojis that were later incorporated were already present in the Unicode list of characters. This component instructs the software to render the preceding character as emoji instead of plain font. Thereby maintaining uniform layout of emoji representations.

Some devices may show a blank box or X instead of Variation Selector-16 emoji as every device doesn't support each one of the emoji.
This emoji was first introduced in Unicode 3.2 and was later added to Emoji 11.0. Variation Selector-16 emoji was first rolled out by Microsoft on October 26, 2012 with Windows 8.0 update. Apple added the emoji after a long gap on October 28, 2019 respectively.
